Brisbane is Queensland's main air harbor and Australia's third-largest airport. It is located on the shore of Moreton Bay, 17 kilometers east of the city center. The airport was awarded the prestigious Skytrax award for the "Best Airport in the Australian Pacific Region." It serves more than 70 routes and has an annual passenger traffic of 23.5 million people. Sydney, Melbourne, and Singapore are the most popular destinations. It serves as an additional hub for national Qantas, as well as a hub for low-cost companies Virgin Australia and Jetstar. In 1925, the Eagle Farm airfield was built near the current location. During World War II, Brisbane was the headquarters of the Supreme Headquarters Allied Expeditionary Force on the Southwest Pacific Front. The American Army significantly modernized and expanded the airfield to receive heavy military aircraft. This contributed considerably to the development of the civilian airport in the postwar years. The modern complex with two runways and a domestic air terminal was launched in 1988, and the international sector was completed seven years later.
