Located near the city of Khimki in the Moscow region, about 30 kilometers from the center of Moscow. Sheremetyevsky Airdrome was designed and built for the need of the USSR Air Force in the early 1950s. In 1959, by decree of N. S. Khrushchev was converted into a civilian airport and renamed Sheremetyevo. The first civilian airplane from Leningrad took an airfield on August 11, 1959. Since then, the airport has been actively developed and modernized. Under construction were the new runway surface and Sheremetyevo-1 terminal building.
In the early 2000s, the airport management faced a number of problems. A sharp decrease in passenger throughput capacity caused by the rising of higher safety standards and poor transport links with Moscow. The solution was the construction of two new terminals and railway lines to Belorussky and Savyolovsky stations.
Today, Sheremetyevo Alexander S. Pushkin International Airport is equipped with all modern systems and equipment, which allows receiving and servicing flights of more than 40 airlines, including Aeroflot, the Russian national carrier.
