Vienna State Opera

To content
The Vienna Opera appeared back in the XVII century. However, the plays had been performed in various theatres till in 1869 the building of the Vienna State Opera (Wiener Staatsoper) was not finished. It constructed at the order of Emperor Franz Josef.

On the opening night, the opera “Don Giovanni” by Mozart was performed. The building of the Vienna State Opera was destroyed in 1945 during the bombing. Staatsoper had been restored only by 1955. It’s remarkable, that till 1918, this cultural attraction of Austria was called the Vienna Court Opera.

Vienna Opera Ball

Once in a year, usually in February, the audience hall and the stage of Staatsoper turn into an enormous dancing hall which hosts the most renowned ball in Austria — Opera Ball. All those who want to attend the Vienna Opera Ball will have to pay from 200 to 700 euros for a ticket. If you want to reserve a box, be ready to pay from 4.5 to 10 thousand euro.

Tour to the building of Vienna Opera

If you while exploring the attractions in Austria you realize that you are not a big fan of opera, you can always attend a tour inside the building of Staatsoper. Such tours are held every day at 2 pm. The ticket for adults costs 4 euros, a student must pay 2.5 euro, and children — 1.5. You can purchase the ticket 15 minutes before the excursion.

Attendance of plays in Staatsoper

Despite the high cost of the tickets, the Vienna State Opera is sold out almost every night. Therefore, you should take care of buying the ticket not later than 30 days before the play. However, if you take into account that there are standing rooms in Staatsoper, you can purchase a ticket one hour before a play.

  • plays of category A. They will be the right choice for opera gourmet and wealthy people. These are the latest performances and worldwide known celebrities. Art requires sacrifices so the price for the ticket is going to be unbelievably high;
  • plays of category B. They will appeal to the liking of the music fans who want to know everything about it. This is the golden mean regarding a price;
  • plays of category C. Cheap performances, routine production of Vienna State Opera. Though the plays are of high quality, not everyone enjoys them.

Among other cultural attractions in Vienna: Vienna Theatre, Russian Club, Burgtheater, Vienna Konzerthaus, Vienna Music Association, Raimund Theater, and also the Belvedere Palace.
