The main adornment of Cairo is Citadel. The enceinte was built in the 12th century by the order of Sultan Saladin. The heart of the Citadel of Cairo is the Great Mosque of Muhammad Ali that was built much later after the fortress construction. The mosque was erected in the 19th century. It was created by the Turkish architect Yusuf Bushnak. The mosque impressively rises above the Saladin Citadel making it more pompous. Thin needles of the minarets are seen almost from any spot of Cairo.

Description of the Mosque of Muhammad Ali in Cairo

Muhammad Ali was a ruler of Egypt during the period from 1805 to 1849, and the mosque was built for him. Unfortunately, Pasha died before the mosque completion, and the construction was ready only during the rule of his successor. Muhammad Ali was buried in a tomb located on the South-Eastern side of the praying house.

Muslim traditions forbid to depict images of people, so there are no icons in the mosque - the walls are decorated with ornaments. The praying hall has a square shape, the width of which is 40 meters, and the height of the dome is 52 meters. The windows are decorated with glass painting through which a dim light comes into the hall. Dimensions of the hall are truly impressive: any coming man feels so small in this kingdom of Allah.

Inner Decoration of the Mosque

The Mosque on Muhammad Ali has a quadrate plan and consists of two sections: the Western section has a name of Sahn meaning a Courtyard. The Eastern section is known as Beit Al Salah, meaning a Praying house.

Inner decoration of the mosque looks gorgeous. The Great Mosque of Mohammad Ali is sometimes called the Alabaster Mosque because its walls are covered with the alabaster panels. Numerous candle lights illuminate the Arabic inscriptions in the mosque. The mihrab is goldenly garnished.

There are two minbars in the hall. It is notable that one of them is made in the modern Art Nouveau style. One corner of the mosque is designated to the tomb of Muhammad Ali. He was buried here with the full honors appropriate to his rank. Furthermore, there is a fountain for ablution within the hall.

One of the main features of the inner decoration of the mosque is a huge clock that was presented by French King Louis Philippe to the Egyptian ruler. There were several attempts to wind the clock but it did not run anyway. From the side of Egypt, Cairo presented France a huge ancient obelisk that was kept there since the time of pharaohs ruling. Today, the obelisk beautifies the Place de la Concorde in Paris.

The inner dome impresses with its dimensions and form reminding the mosques in Istanbul. The dome is surrounded with six medallions with the inscription of the names of Allah (God) and Muhammad (prophet), and also the names of four khalifahs - Abu Bakr, Omar, Osman, and Ali.
