Nymphenburg Palace

To content
Munchen prepared its attractions for all the fans of history and antiquities.

The Nymphenburg Palace friendly opens its doors to all the visitors. It’s not just another old building. This is a former summer residence of the Bavarian rulers. The house is located in the western part of the city, nearby the underground station. The residence is erected in the middle of a well-groomed and beautiful park zone. This used to be the former residence of the House of Wittelsbach who was the oldest dynasty in Europe.

Historic past

It was decided to erect the palace in the baroque style. This process had been delayed for centuries and that’s why five generations of the Wittelsbach participated in the construction. We can say without hesitations that this magnificent building and the adjoining constructions absorbed the spirit of several generations of the Bavarian rulers. They also saw many historical events.

The prince-electoral named Ferdinand Maria initiated the grandiose construction. The building of the palace was planned to be finished on the occasion of a significant moment - the birth of the successor to the throne, Maximilian Emanuel. It took 10 years to erect it - from 1664 to 1674. This complex was enlarged during the reign of Maximilian Emanuel in 1700. He invited famous architects of that time - Enrico Zukalli and Giovanni Antonio Viscardi. The pavilions and galleries were equipped with their help. The southern part of the palace - Marstall - appeared several years later. The greenhouse was laid in the north. The successors to the throne didn’t forget about the parkland and it was expanded in the XVIII century.

Interior of the Palace

The interior design of the palace provokes great interest among the visitors. Every room deserves your attention. However, the Stone Hall in Rococo style and generously decorated with the frescoes by Zimmermann is the most popular location. The lacquer cabinet is worth seeing with its black and red lacquered Chinese panels.

Germany managed to save a lot of attractions. Unfortunately, there are not so many magnificent constructions which managed to survive in such a perfect condition till nowadays. Every room in the palace is truly priceless. Take, for instance, the Great Gallery of Beauty with its 36 portraits of the most beautiful Munich women!

There are also many other exhibits represented here from the porcelain museum. They were produced at the local manufacture. These are the invaluable treasure that the palace keeps with the solicitude for the upcoming generations.

If you enjoyed walking around the park near the palace, consider visiting another model of landscape design - the English Garden.
