Guatemala is the capital and the largest city in Central America, located in the southern part of the Republic of Guatemala. It was founded in 1776. After a devastating earthquake three years earlier, the Spaniards decided to move the capital of the Captaincy General here. Previously, the site of the modern metropolis used to be the ancient Mayan city of Kaminaljuyu. Today its ruins are under modern buildings, making excavations much more difficult. The National Museum of Ethnography and Archaeology has an exposition devoted to Maya culture. From here, you can go on a tour of Tikal National Park to explore the famous Mayan pyramids and temples. It is worth visiting the city's Central Square, seeing the main architectural and historical monuments, go to Lake Atitlan, conquer the challenging pedestrian route to the waterfalls of Semuk Champei.
