Shimla is a mountain town in the north of India, located at an average altitude of about 2400 m above sea level. It is the capital of the state of Himachal Pradesh, as well as the famous Indian mountain and climate resort, which attracts many tourists every year. In the second half of the XIX century, the British appreciated the curative properties of the mountain air and made Shimla the summer capital of their estates in South Asia. The city has temples and palaces famous for their architecture, such as the pompous Vice-King's Residence of India, constructed in the late XIX century, impressive buildings and structures. The mountain railway line connecting Shimla with Kalka is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It was nicknamed "The British Pearl of the East" because of 806 bridges and 103 tunnels built. The first train passed on this route in 1906.
