Capitoline Hill

Capitoline Hill or Roman Capitol - one of the seven hills of Rome
To content

The Capitolium has been the embodiment of Rome’s greatness from ancient times. The Temple of Jupiter Capitolinus is situated here and gave the title “Capitolium”. Later, it was used to define the location in general. Many beautiful buildings and attractions are concentrated in this area.

What to see on Capitoline Hill?

Even though the Capitolium is not the largest hill among all seven hills in Rome, it gathered plenty of unique and significant buildings. Here you can find the wonderful Piazza del Campidoglio and gorgeous palaces. And the equestrian statue of Marcus Aurelius in the center of the composition will blow your mind.

The pavement of the piazza is decorated with original ellipses and scrolls made from sketches of the maestro. The statue was brought here in the middle of the XVI century. There is a belief, that Michelangelo didn’t even expect that this grandiose statue would become the central element.

There huge palaces around the piazza: the Palace of the Conservators, Senatorial Palace, and New Palace. During the Renaissance, the piazza was reconstructed. The New Palace and the Palace of the Conservators were built in the XVI century. Remarkably, they look as like as two peas. Their facades, Corinthian pilasters, attics and balustrades decorated with statues are all the same. It seems that they were created in one image.

There are two picturesque stairways at the entrance to the Senatorial Palace. When you walk up these stairs, you feel the grandeur of the moment and the magnificence of this Rome attraction. The interior of the building is decorated with astonishing salons. You shall find here the Salon of Flags, Salon of Chariots, Green Salon, and other interesting decors. The other two palaces are nowadays occupied by the Capitoline Museums. Their displays offer a wide collection of Roman and Greek sculptures.

Down the sides of the hill

Every hill several sides decorated with great buildings. It’s impermissible to wipe them off the map. The Capitolium is an unrepeatable Italian attraction. It is also framed by various constructions. For example, the remains of the Temple of Jupiter are located on the south side of the hill. According to the Romans, this god will either help to save Rome or destroy it. The Basilica of St. Mary of the Altar of Heaven stands out on the background of these buildings. The staircase which leads to this church had an important reason to be built. It symbolized the end of the outbreak of plague in the XIV century. According to one legend, a flock of geese that saved Rome from enemies used to live here.

If you want to learn more about the history and architecture of the former Roman Empire, don’t forget to check out the Arch of Constantine. It symbolizes the Emperor’s victory over Maxentius at the Battle of Milvian Bridge.
