Discover Takayama
The Japanese city with a medieval layout

The city surrounded by mountains, where history and traditions are celebrated

Takayama

The Japanese city of Takayama, located on the island of Honshu, in Gifu Prefecture, is surrounded by mountains. It always has been distinguished by some isolation and uniqueness of cultural development. It is not surprising that, unlike many Japanese cities, Takayama was able to preserve its medieval layout to this day. Tourists who visit the Old City of Sannomachi, feel like getting to the past. Here you can stroll along the streets with old houses with souvenir shops, restaurants and cafes on the first floor, ride a rickshaw and try dango - fried rice flour balls. Fans of strong drinks can taste real Japanese sake in one of the ancient distilleries. You should definitely visit the Hida, an open-air museum. There you can see real rural houses and buildings in the region. The morning city markets, museums, the ancient Kokubun-ji temple of the 16th century are also worth visiting.
