Mexican Merida is the most populous city in the Yucatan Peninsula. It is a fantastic combination of antiquity and modernity. Merida is the capital of the Yucatan state. Founded in 1542, Mérida is the best place to get acquainted with the region's culture and identity. Here you will find the oldest cathedral in the North and South America - Catedral de San Ildefonso. Its construction lasted almost four decades and was completed in 1598. The cathedral is the largest in Yucatan, known for its frescoes depicting Francisco de Montejo's meeting with Maya ruler Tutul Xiu, as well as the statue of Black Christ. Tourists can visit the Great Museum of Maya World, the Historical Museum, many churches, the Palace Museo Casa Montejo, the Monastery of San Francisco.
