Leon is located in the north-west of Spain. The city was founded by the Romans as early as 29 BC — one of the legions was located here. Leon is rich in architectural monuments of different eras and styles. In the Old Town, you can find sections of ancient Roman defensive walls. The Basílica de San Isidoro was built in 1055 in Roman style. It is worth seeing the "Pantheon of the Kings" located inside the cathedral with unique paintings on the vault. The Santa María de León Cathedral is of the early Gothic style. French architects built it, and the windows are almost entirely stained-glass. This temple is the best-preserved Gothic structure in Spain. The Convento de San Marcos was founded in the XII century. Its facade is a striking example of architecture in the style of Plateresque. In the city, you can visit several museums, look at ancient palaces and houses.
