Scotland is the part of Great Britain with its own unique spirit and color. It’s not surprising that so many tourists are attracted by the trails and routes which run across this picturesque land.

The central and the most outstanding attraction of Scotland is Edinburgh Castle. It’s the most recognizable spot in the country and a real touristic mecca. The unassailable fortress erected on the top of the extinct volcano simply mesmerizes with its charm and majesty.

Historic facts

The fortress stands on the Castle Rock which had been from time immemorial dwelt by various nations. The first record of this place is found at the Ptolemy’s map where he describes the settlement of the Votadini. There, the Castle Rock is mentioned as “Alauna” which translates as “rock place”. Some scientists believe that the first people began to dwell in this area around 1000 years AD.

The first building of the castle dates back to the Medieval. The most considerable construction of the castle took place in the XVII century. It was the period when Edinburgh Castle became the center of the Scottish capital. The fortress is surrounded by forbidding cliffs from its three sides. There’s only one path leading to the fort which can be fully observed from the castle. That’s why not many conquerors could have boasted of the successful storm of the castle. All the wars in the country come down to the siege and conquest of the fortress. It’s still called the “Key to Scotland”. In the XVIII century, the castle was turned into a prison. Nowadays, Edinburgh Castle is ranked as the National Memorial and is considered to be one of the most beautiful castles in the world.

The Mountebank Comedy Walk of Edinburgh
3 reviews
The Mountebank Comedy walk is Edinburgh's only comedy walking tour and the only tour lead by a professional local comedian. This is a tour that is both 'hysterical' and 'historical'. On the Mountebank Tour you will laugh a lot and learn a little. The tour is a mixture of stand-up comedy and historical story telling. I try not to get too bogged down in dates and names and instead tell stories that you will hopefully remember and regale your friends and family with back home! Why do they fire a massive cannon every lunch time at 1 o'clock? Is the Unicorn really Scotland's national animal? Why are so many of Edinburgh's pubs named after brutal murderers? Do they really eat deep-fired mars bars in Scotland? I'll tell you everything you want to know about Edinburgh and possibly a little you didn't want to know about me! "a star on the rise at the moment with material totally on the pulse, Daniel is one to watch". (Mumble Comedy)'best history show 2019 Fringe' (Herald)
