Southampton

Southampton is located in the south of England, on the shores of the ice-free strait of The Solent. The Roman settlement on the site of the modern city was founded in 43 AD. Since the Middle Ages, the city has played a significant role in the country's history as one of the leading ports of the Kingdom of England and the British Empire. It was from Southampton that the first and last Titanic voyage set off. The city was severely destroyed during World War II. The sights worth mentioning include the extant fragments of the medieval city walls; Calshot Castle, constructed in the XVII century to protect the port; St. Michael the Archangel Church in the Romanesque style; the northern city gate Bargate of the XII century; King John's house of the XI century. It is also worth visiting the Maritime Museum, City Art Gallery, National Automobile Museum.
