На западной стороне скалистого полуострова, на самой окраине Старого города возвышается величественная крепость де Сан-Кристобаль, построенная на стратегической территории в акватории Карибского моря для защиты города и бухты с северо-востока от нападений во времена испанской колонизации. А основное городское вооружение хранилось на Пороховом складе.
Историческая справка
Крепость Сан-Кристобаль была возведена в XVII веке и служила мощным оборонительным сооружением от набегов французских, голландских и британских корсаров, а также от регулярных войск государств-неприятелей, которые в этом регионе Нового Света менялись очень часто. Валы форта, несмотря на долгую и продолжительную борьбу, сохранились нетронутыми. Это свидетельствует о мощи и величии сооружения, а также о его богатом боевом опыте героизме защитников.
В середине XIX века крепость Сан-Кристобаль была признана составной частью Национально исторического памятника архитектуры Сан-Хуана, а уже во второй половине прошлого века крепость была добавлена к списку исторического и культурного ЮНЕСКО.
Архитектурные особенности
Форт Сан-Кристобаль считается великолепным образцом военной архитектуры, который идеально приспособлен к условиям гаваней Америки. Это сооружение занимает площадь более 26 акров и является частью оборонительной системы, и остается вторым по величине фортификационным узлом после форта Эль-Морро. Крепость Сан-Кристобаль построена для защиты города от подходов с суши.
Сейчас туристы и местные жители часто приходят посмотреть на валы крепости и остаются отдохнуть на большом зеленом поле, окружающем сегодня территорию форта. Здесь устраивают пикники, играют с детьми и запускают воздушного змея.
